When did you know...?

"When did you know you wanted to keep snakes?"

I get this question all the time when I tell people that I have pythons, especially when I tell them that I keep them in my bedroom!

When I was younger, the house that I lived in had a massive garden with a lot of rocks and humid spots perfect for all kinds of creatures. Because of this, we got a lot of slow worms (Anguis fragilis) in my garden. So when I was about 4 years old I went out into the garden and turned over all the rocks at the sides of the flower beds, hunting for slow worms. I was absolutely obsessed! Now I know that slow worms are more closely related to lizards than they are snakes, but obviously when I was 4 years old and saw a slow worm in my garden I yelled "SNAKES!!" :) and this is where my obsession began...

When I was a bit older I moved on from the slow worms and started looking for grass snakes over my local nature reserve. Now I would never actually catch any of the snakes, but I'd love to just look for them in their natural habitat and observe them if I could (I clearly thought I was David Attenborough).

So I'd always been interested by reptiles and snakes, and you'd definitely find me in the reptile section at the zoo. Then one day, whilst watching a show on reptiles and pythons, I decided that I wanted one! So I got straight onto my laptop and started researching the best snakes for beginners, how much they cost and set ups etc. After a lot of researching, and a lot of convincing my Mum, I got my first Royal Python - Fifi!

As many of you know... once you have one Royal Python you will want more! And now I'm branching out and looking into breeding different morphs, my obsession with these beautiful kind animals is growing larger and larger!
